Code: ENF/18/120 LILAC (Language in Learning Across the Curriculum) Available to schools on request

Teaching ESL students in mainstream classrooms: Language in learning across the curriculum (LILAC) is a professional development course published and certified by the Department for Education and Child Development South Australia.

This internationally recognised qualification is delivered by experienced accredited tutors. The course is suitable for Primary and Secondary staff and will be delivered centrally as outlined below.

The aims of LILAC are:

  • to develop teachers’ awareness of the need to take into account the cultural and linguistic diversity and experiences of all pupils and ways in which this can be done
  • to develop teachers’ understanding of the central role that language plays in learning and develop teaching practices which can be used across the curriculum to address the language-related needs of all pupils, with a particular focus on bilingual pupils
  • to provide a positive context for teachers to reflect critically and openly on their teaching and to trial suggested strategies
  • to develop collaborative working relationships between teachers by having a shared understanding of how to support all pupils
  • to promote whole school approaches to address the learning needs of advanced bilingual pupils

The structure of LILAC:

Between each session there is a requirement that all participants carry out readings and between module activities. The activities are based on strategies discussed in LILAC sessions. The readings consolidate and extend the content of the sessions as well as offering practical suggestions and activities.

The LILAC programme will consist of one twilight briefing meeting and eight training sessions taking place every two to three weeks.
